Auggie (Portland, OR). Coding with Kids® student since 2021. Meet Auggie - A creative coder and future video game developer! Auggie is a third grader this year, and although he may be young, he has already been coding for four years — just about half his life! He is currently enrolled in Level 3 of Coder’s Ladder®. Over the years, Auggie has learned to program in Python, Scratch, Minecraft, and LEGO Robotics in his Coder’s Ladder® and afterschool enrichment classes. Earlier on in his journey, he also took the initiative to explore programming on his own by self-studying YouTube videos. “My favorite thing about coding is that I can be creative and I can make games!” – AuggieAuggie has an eye for designing graphics. He loves doodling and he incorporates these artistic talents to design characters and backgrounds in his projects. Recently, Auggie has been creating operating systems in Python and PenguinMod (a block-based programming platform similar to Scratch). One of Auggie’s OS programs (pictured below!) features a desktop interface that lets users choose from a variety of functions, including a user login, a note-taking tool, a YouTube video viewer, and a web browser that incorporates HTML iFrame elements. “He’s always super creative — all the little characters he comes up with and how he wants to incorporate his own personality into his code is pretty fun.” – Kris, Auggie’s parent Auggie has impressed his instructors, parents, and classmates with his creativity and work ethic. His instructor, Lyn, is especially impressed by his enthusiasm and attention to detail in all the design elements that make his projects shine. Auggie is a great student and self-motivated coder who goes the extra mile, often looking things up or experimenting on his own to add extra features to his projects. The appreciation goes both ways — Auggie is grateful that Lyn guides him in the right direction and helps him out when he gets stuck. “He's very self-motivated and a great problem-solver. He doesn't hesitate to experiment with ideas and/or seek out references to figure out how to make something work.” – Lyn, Auggie’s instructorWhen he’s not coding, Auggie loves playing video games of all genres. Recently, he’s been enjoying a game called Astrobot (and he’s already made it through to the third world of the game)! This passion may just lead him to his future career — when he grows up, Auggie wants to create video games and work on everything from the creative design to the technical programming. Auggie has some sage advice for other young coders: “Use your imagination and don’t give up!” We couldn’t have put it any better. We’re thrilled to have Auggie as part of our Coding with Kids® community, and we are so excited to see what amazing projects he creates next! This operating system program is just like the real thing, complete with the Windows startup sound effect! Auggie created this fun stick figure-maker. Users can click the buttons to change the character’s features.

Karina (Houston, TX). Coding with Kids® student since 2022. Meet Karina - A multi-talented creative coding star! Karina started coding in third grade when she got her first iMac and started playing around with Scratch projects at home. Starting with projects like a text-to-speech conversation simulator, she’s blossomed into an advanced coder with a particular passion for web development. Karina enjoys the design aspect of building web pages because it allows her to integrate her love for art with her technical HTML, CSS, and JavaScript skills. “My favorite thing about coding class is that I can basically take ones and zeros and make them into the most beautiful or functional or aesthetically pleasing thing ever.” - KarinaKarina is currently enrolled in Level 4 of Coder’s Ladder®. She has impressed her instructor, Arielle, by being not just a great programmer, but also an outstanding student. Over the course of Arielle’s class, Karina has grown leaps and bounds in her skill and confidence. She’s always ready to tackle challenges head-on and joins each class excited to code, inspiring her classmates to match her enthusiasm. Karina appreciates the supportive and fun environment her teacher has fostered in class. “Ms. Ari is a very optimistic person. She always has a smile on her face,” Karina said. Arielle finds ways to make class fun, for example, by using a ticket incentive system that rewards students’ progress and hard work with fun prizes like getting to choose the theme for the class’ game-based learning platform, Gimkit. “Karina is an incredible learner… She is probably one of the most active participants I've seen across all of my classes, always answering questions and making sure to ask questions to clarify her understanding of different tasks.” - Arielle, Karina’s instructor Karina enjoys integrating her other hobbies into her coding projects. Outside of coding, Karina is also passionate about speech and debate (she regularly competes in performing 10-minute memorized speeches!). Recently, she created a Debate Clicker game—her first commission, inspired by her friends in debate class who are avid Cookie Clicker players. “I was in debate class when they asked me to make a game for them, and someone just shouted ‘Cookie Clicker!’ So I decided to make a Debate Clicker, because I don’t want to get copyrighted here,” said Karina. “Coding is like baking a cake: you pop in the flour, you add the eggs, you mix it all up, and then you have a cake. Coding is very similar to that, except you make your own ingredients, too. In the end, it’s always worth it because it’s so interesting to see what it looks like.” - KarinaIn the future, Karina has her sights set on becoming a family doctor. Still, she knows that coding is a valuable skill not just for software engineers, but also for other careers. She’ll need her technology skills to wrangle spreadsheets and charts, for example. Best of all, she sees coding as a creative outlet that allows her to have fun and make imaginative projects from scratch. We know that Karina’s work ethic and passion will take her far, and we can’t wait to see what she creates next! This painting program combines Karina’s love for art and coding. She got help from her teacher to add extra colors! Karina created this portfolio website in class. It shows off the different projects she’s created, all in one place. This fun site lets users pick different toppings and order a custom ramen. Karina used many different HTML elements to make it. Karina created this Debate Clicker for her friends in debate class. Her high score is an impressive 73 clicks per minute!
Superstar Coder Kevin (Age 13)

Kevin (Palo Alto, CA). Coding with Kids® student since 2023. Meet Kevin - A self-motivated seventh grader with a passion for problem-solving, teaching others, and speed-solving Rubik's cubes! Kevin began his coding journey in fourth grade using a self-taught approach, starting with Scratch before getting hooked on coding and diving deeper into Python, web development, AI and more. He loves the challenge of programming and is always practicing online, reading coding textbooks, and brainstorming ideas for his next project. Recently, he’s been working on a shopping list helper, an analog clock program, and a Blackjack game (although there’s no money involved, he mentioned). “He’s not just detail oriented—he’s also very self-motivated. He would always like to challenge himself to learn more, and I think that’s one of his biggest strengths.” - Nick, Kevin’s dadKevin is currently enrolled in Level M of Coder’s Ladder®, where he has gone above and beyond to add bonus features with his own flair to class projects. For example, in his Space Age project, Kevin implemented a unique twist by designing a bot, allowing users to play a single-player version of the game. He used randomizers and managed complex collision mechanics to simulate a human’s unpredictable decisions, leveling up his game. “My teacher won’t directly give you the answer, which I find really helpful. She’d always give hints instead of telling you the answer so that you can go through the learning process and problem solve off of her hints.” - Kevin In addition to his personal projects, Kevin has already started sharing his love for coding with others. This year, he co-founded a coding club at school where he and his friends have been teaching fellow students how to code a Connect Four game in Python. He has also created HTML and CSS dictionary websites, which are free resources for others to learn web development. “What impresses me most about Kevin's work is his exceptional ability to grasp advanced programming concepts and apply them creatively.” - Nidhi, Kevin’s instructorBeyond coding, Kevin enjoys playing tennis and getting faster at solving Rubik’s cubes (which he can already solve in under 30 seconds)! He started learning how to cube around the same time he started coding and has found a connection between the two—the problem-solving aspect of the Rubik’s cube helps him find creative ways to structure his code. Kevin’s advice to other aspiring programmers is to be patient with the learning process: “You have to learn step by step—start off with easier projects and then add functions on one and lists on another so you can learn one thing at a time, which really does help you master things.” We can’t wait to see the amazing things Kevin will learn and create next! Kevin's most recent game incorporates random number generation in Python, which he learned in his Level M class. In this Brick Breaker game, Kevin added multiple levels, with each one making the ball go faster. Kevin created this analog clock program from scratch. He is currently working on a second version!

Published on Nov 6, 2024 by Marek Brejl, Founder of Coding with Kids
Stella (Des Moines, WA). Coding with Kids® student since 2024. Stella started coding in 5th grade when she was introduced to Scratch at school. She was immediately hooked, spending much of her free time making games. Since then, she’s made a wide variety of Scratch games, and has even gotten her friends excited about coding and game development. Her first experience with Coding with Kids was through a camp offered in the summer of 2024. Since then, her interest has only grown. “If you love video games, you could make your own video game. There's no pressure - no one is making you do it - it's not a class assignment. Just have fun and be creative!" - Stella In addition to Scratch, she’s started learning how to code in Python, where she continues to pursue her interest in making games of all kinds. Some of her favorite projects are recreations of famous arcade games, such as the game “Galaga.” One of her personal goals is to expand her knowledge of Python to the point where she can recreate this classic game in other coding languages. She also enjoys crafting challenging platforming games with high stakes and high scores! “For Stella, it's a bit like drawing or art. You can try a few standard ways of doing things, but then you can get inventive and try out new ideas or methods.” - Kyle, Stella’s dad. She’s found great connections between coding and other areas of her life. For example, she used coding principles to help her solve puzzles with her friends in an escape room recently. She says that learning coding fundamentals helps things click in her brain. She knows that whatever is next for her, a strong foundation in computer science will help her get there. Stella’s passion is contagious, and we can’t wait to see what she creates next! “I really want to level up to the point where I can make new games, not just recreate them." - Stella

Thumnail for Superstar Coder Daxton (Age 12)
Published on Oct 9, 2024 by Coding with Kids
Daxton (Grand Junction, CO). Coding with Kids® student since 2020. Daxton is a skilled coder who is thrilling his friends and honing his skills with coding creations! Daxton is a multi-talented developer-in-the-making, busy honing his skills at Coding with Kids! At the age of seven, Daxton started coding with Scratch Jr., Now he is 12, and he has advanced all the way to Level 6 in our Coder’s Ladder program. Along his coding journey, he’s enjoyed learned how to code in Python, HTML, CSS, Javascript, and C#. His advancement has been marked with quite a few accomplishments, including reaching Level 6 by age 12 and getting second place in a Scratch coding competition hosted by Coding with Kids! “There’s some amazing creations that players make with these [game] servers. The community itself allows for a lot of learning. I love taking well-known ideas and using them completely differently.” - DaxtonIn addition to his achievements in class, his coding efforts outside of the classroom have been remarkable! Daxton regularly creates projects and shares them with friends. His latest work is a chat platform using express.js that he can use to “pass notes” with his friends while in class, even if those classrooms are halfway across the world! He also shares his coding knowledge with the world, creating Roblox studio tutorials on a YouTube channel that has reached 1600 subscribers. He has even started making money from this channel! “Daxton truly has a passion for coding as shown through the time and dedication he pours into his projects. He is always challenging himself (as well as myself!) to learn and implement something new, he tends to think outside of the box when adding his own personal flair and style to the websites we create in class, and overall, he makes class so much fun when sharing his inspirational ideas.” - Daxton’s Instructor While Daxton already has the skills and accolades of a professional coder, he has set his sights higher. Daxton’s goal is to become a full-stack developer, and he has a keen interest in ethical hacking and cybersecurity. Viraj (Woodinville, WA). Coding with Kids® student since 2022. Meet Viraj - a curious and motivated coder with a passion for music and coding! This month’s Superstar Coder is Viraj, a musical-minded 4th grader! Viraj began coding when he was 7 years old as a way to keep busy and develop his skills during the pandemic. With the help of a few stellar instructors, Viraj has found a way to express himself creatively and has begun ascending the Coder’s Ladder. A big reason why Viraj enjoys coding, especially games, is for the soundtracks that he includes in his projects. Viraj loves music, and all his favorite projects have awesome musical accompaniment, such as his infinite-runner style project called "Music Hero," or his iTunes-style music player. “I loved making the ship project in Scratch. It was a game that could go on forever, and I thought that was special.”Viraj started his journey with Scratch, but he has picked up some Python skills along the way. Outside of class, Viraj extends his practice by using both Python and HTML to create quick and easy apps and games - and he is eager to demonstrate his creations. This has made him an invaluable resource in his Robotics extracurricular activities. One of his recent projects using his Python skills is an “Ask the Expert” app that answers questions about countries using a lookup feature. “In the future, I want to learn HTML so I can make cool websites and games that are accessible for everyone!”In the future, Viraj would like to be an engineer or game designer, and we know that whatever Viraj creates will have some amazing tunes to go along with it! Viraj’s teachers say that he is endlessly curious and always eager to show off what he’s been learning. They also say he has strong independent coding abilities and works hard to solve his own problems. Viraj is one to watch as he continues his coding journey!

Coding won’t always be fun and games of course, but with Alex’s determination, no challenge will be too great. “He is very patient, determined, and has a great growth mindset!” - Lyn (Alex's instructor)Alex’s instructors say he has an irrepressible curiosity and is eager and energetic in class. These are great qualities for any student, but for coders looking to achieve great things, they are perfect. Alex really enjoys learning about math and space, and says he’d love to work for SpaceX or NASA someday, and we certainly believe he can make it happen. When he is working for a space company someday, he plans on using his coding skills to bring humanity to Mars or refine the rovers that crisscross foreign planets. Coding has honed Alex’s mathematical mind, teaching him concepts like coordinates and geometry, which are useful both for sprite-based games and rocket-based physics. “Alex really loves to make his games as full of fun and character as possible. It’s great to have him in class.” - Lyn (Alex's instructor) We’re glad to be a part of Alex’s journey and we hope he will keep coding well into his future. We’ll be cheering for Alex every step of the way as he reaches for the stars!

Miguel (Spring, TX). Coding with Kids® student since 2022. Meet Miguel - Miguel is off to the races at Coding with Kids! He joined classes in the Summer of 2022, and quickly began making his own comic-book-based games inspired by his favorite comic, Cat Ninja. He thoroughly enjoys working with sprites and visuals of all kinds, especially his custom Line Rider game nicknamed “Mr. Egg Walks.” More than just creating flashy visuals, however, Miguel also enjoys the more scientific aspects of coding. His favorite class experience so far was using math to work out what angles to turn his turtle sprite just the right way to draw awesome patterns in the Turtle Draw projects. Miguel fondly recalls setting up easy batches of instructions to draw simple shapes like squares and circles, and then combining those instructions to make more complex patterns. “It was really fun to see the pencil following my instructions to draw squares, circles, and other shapes.”Outside of class, Miguel is motivated to challenge himself to complete more difficult versions of his in-class projects, or by adding new flourishes like backgrounds or additional sprites. Coding has taught him to be patient and inquisitive, to pay detailed attention to the task at hand, and to ask questions frequently and politely. Manners matter, even in programming! “I also use these skills in my school and martial arts classes. I’m interested in becoming a game developer or mathematician.” Miguel’s coding experiences will help him in many ways, no matter what exciting and challenging road he sets himself on next. His swift progress through Scratch makes us all thrilled to see what Miguel will do next!

Published on Dec 19, 2023 by Coding with Kids
Zach (Chicago, IL). Coding with Kids® student since 2021. Meet Zach - By the time he was in first grade, Zach was already coding. He began his journey with Hour of Code, learning Scratch and taking off from there. In 7th grade, he had set his course on becoming a software developer. With that goal in mind, he joined Coding with Kids the same year. He has raced up the Coder’s Ladder in the years since, and he's currently working his way through Level 5. Some of his favorite projects include designing versions of classic games such as "2048," as well as creating Dungeon Crawlers and text analysis projects. In his own time, Zach is learning C++, and during the day, he is taking AP Computer Science classes at his high school! “Coding is both science and art, capable of actualizing wisps of thoughts and ideas into digital reality.”Coding has many hurdles, as any coder will tell you, and Zach has learned patience and persistence during his time learning computer science. During the difficult stretches, Zach keeps his goals in mind and does his best to enjoy even the setbacks. Zach’s teachers say he’s bright and active, asking insightful questions and constantly looking to improve himself and understand the “why”, not merely the “how”. He’s a great presence in the classroom who lifts up both the teacher and his fellow students. More than anything, coding has given Zach a path in life that he’d like to follow, and the skills to do so.

Clara (Forest City, California). Coding with Kids® student since 2018. Meet Clara - One of our youngest Level 5 students! Clara embarked on her coding journey by participating in a Scratch camp during the summer of 2020. In August of the same year, she joined Coder’s Ladder and swiftly ascended to Level 5, making her one of our youngest Level 5 students! Her passion lies in creating interactive games and crafting impeccable websites, meticulously selecting elements that harmonize with her distinct preferences for color and layout. “I don’t know why, but I like to figure out things by myself.”Clara's instructors have been delighted by her patient determination, boundless enthusiasm, and outgoing demeanor. She revels in the challenge of deciphering complex problems and then piecing together the puzzle to achieve remarkable results. While her proficiency shines in JavaScript, she also enjoys Python and has independently developed a few games beyond the classroom. Over the summer, for example, she single-handedly created versions of the classic games "Hangman" and "Rock, Paper, Scissors." “I like to make things work, play Roblox and dance hip-hop!” Clara's coding journey has not only fostered her creativity but has also extended its influence to other domains like mathematics and cooking. The logical and systematic thinking instilled by coding proves invaluable when she encounters mathematical challenges. Similarly, her coding experiences have emboldened her to experiment in the kitchen, recognizing that, akin to coding, there is more than one way to approach a dish. While Clara acknowledges that challenges may still loom ahead and not everything comes effortlessly, her patience and tenacity demonstrate that the realm of possibilities remains open to those who persevere. With time and persistence, she firmly believes that any obstacle can be surmounted, and success is well within reach.

Silas (Seattle, Washington). Coding with Kids® student since 2021. Meet Silas - He began learning JavaScript at just 6 years old! When Silas was just 6 years old, the Covid pandemic hit, and his regular school routine came to a halt. It was during this time that he stumbled upon online JavaScript lessons. Silas took to them right away. He has always loved learning about detailed, technical subjects, but coding offered Silas something unique – an intellectual challenge coupled with a creative outlet. He has never really looked back since that early spark. “One thing I’ve learned from coding is that when something is large or complex, it’s good to break it into smaller pieces. Figure out what a piece is doing, what it isn’t doing, and what it needs to do.”Over the past three years, Silas has diligently honed his coding skills, delving not only into JavaScript but also gaining proficiency in Python, HTML, CSS, and other programming languages. He's gone beyond mere coding to create video games, craft geometric animations, and construct sensor arrays and robots using Arduino and Raspberry Pi. Among his notable achievements, building classic brick breaker and pong games has stood out as a significant accomplishment. When his screen time's up for the day, you'll catch Silas nose-deep in coding guides, Minecraft escapades, and the history of video games. He's not just about building things; he's also a superhero at fixing stuff. When something's glitching, you can bet he won't rest until he's cracked the code. Yep, expect random bursts of cheers like... “Ohh, I know why it’s not working…I can fix it!” So, what does Silas dream of? Well, two things: creating mind-blowing video games that'll suck you right in, or going all super-spy as a C.I.A. analyst (he loves spy books). "Both of those jobs would let me use code and some math, and that sounds cool to me." Silas was selected as a Superstar Coder back in 2021 when he first started at Coding with Kids! We're so impressed with all that Silas has learned over the past two years and can't wait to see where Silas's coding journey takes him!

Arjun (Hoboken, New Jersey). Coding with Kids® student since 2021. Meet Arjun - Arjun has been coding since he was 4 (!!!) and it has taught him to be a leader in the classroom. This month's star coder, Arjun, has been coding and using code logic since before he could even read. He started out in Scratch Jr. which enabled him to use colors and blocks to start building coding projects at a very young age. In the beginning, he was always the youngest in the classroom and so he really credits his instructors for taking the time to nurture his love for coding. From there, Arjun has really flourished, taking his coding to the next level and sharing his passion with others. “My favorite part about coding is making my own sprites and backdrops to make my projects special. ” Now as a rising second grader, Arjun is coding all kinds of projects in Scratch from interactive stories to games with multiple levels and characters. He loves to be creative and incorporate his own ideas for characters and settings into everything he makes. Not only is he thriving in his coding class, he is also bringing skills he's learned through coding to his math, science, and art classes at school. "Hosting hour of code was awesome, I got to show everyone Scratch and help them use it." Normally, Arjun is a more reserved kid but coding makes him light up. This past year, he helped his teacher organize and lead an hour of code event for his classroom. By the end, the whole class was working together on collaborative projects in Scratch and Arjun was answering all kinds of questions around the room. It's clear that coding gives him a confidence boost that helps him share his passion and express himself in new ways. Arjun's dream is to grow up and design rainbow colored robots. With the skills he's building now, his potential to reach and exceed his dream is out of this world!

Aashna (Milpitas, California). Coding with Kids® student since 2019. Meet Aashna - Her hard work and dedication have seen her climb the Coder's Ladder from Level 1 to Level 5! Aashna started coding with us when she was just 7 years old. Over the years she has worked her way from basic animations and games in Scratch all the way to advanced Python and SQL. She adds so much to every class she is in with her willingness to participate and help others. It is amazing what this young coder has been able to accomplish through her passion for code and sheer determination! “I use my coding skills to create things for my family and friends like games and cards.” Aashna is not only hardworking, but also loves to share her skills with her friends and classmates. She is known in her family for creating beautiful animated birthday cards for everyone in Scratch. In her classes, her instructors are always impressed by how willing she is to help others and guide them through problems in their own code. Her enthusiasm in class is infectious whether she is answering questions, sharing her own work, or helping others with their own ideas. "I can't wait for coding each week. I love when my instructor gives us new challenges to work on and figure out." Recently, Aashna had the chance to celebrate her accomplishments when she graduated to Level 5. After 4 years of coding, she has come so far and her skills are out of this world. Her most recent project uses concepts like setting up a server and keeping track of usernames to build a group chat application (like you might use on social media!). Between her commitment to building her skills and her natural collaboration skills, Aashna is well on her way to becoming a program developer.

Natalia (Carrollton, Texas). Coding with Kids® student since 2022. Natalia found her passion for coding at an Hour of Code event at her local library. After creating a dance party in Scratch, she was excited to find out what else she could create and started taking classes with Coding with Kids®. Since then, her love for coding has only grown as she has learned to show her creativity by building her own worlds and characters. “My favorite class experiences are when we can start creating something from scratch and by the end of class, see it all work.” Across all her projects, it is clear Natalia has a knack for storytelling and design. Outside of class, she has been learning to use Photoshop and so she's been able to bring her own creations to life in her stories and games in Scratch. Whether it is a Pokemon navigating a maze or a dragon playing in a band, all of her characters have a ton of personality. You can even see her positivity in her games where other characters cheer you on at each level. These kinds of additions go above and beyond the basics of the project and add her own flare to her creations. "Now, when I play a game, I think about how I might create it in Scratch." Natalia has always been a true gamer girl and enjoyed exploring the worlds of Pokemon and Minecraft in her spare time. These days, coding class has given her the confidence to believe that one day she can create her own games for people around the world to enjoy. We can't wait to see what fun new worlds she builds next!

Dave (Portland, OR). CWK Student Since May 2022 Meet Dave - He loves to code and so sharing his knowledge and helping his classmates is second nature. Dave started at Coding with Kids in a Python camp last summer and really bonded with the other students in the program. One older student in particular really helped to mentor Dave and grow his Python skills. Ever since then he has been inspired to share his skills with less experienced classmates and is always helping to brainstorm and debug other students' projects in class. "Helping my classmates is one of the ways I learn and I like coding so I like sharing my knowledge." From the beginning, what has really inspired Dave is working with his classmates and instructors but through that community, he has found a real love of coding. Recently he created a game where the choices you make along the way guide the story. As you navigate a mine, you make decisions and whether or not you find the treasure depends on those decisions. He also recreated the classic game of Pong in class to learn more about the physics of how it works so he could incorporate those elements in his own work. His projects show curiosity about what code can accomplish and creativity when adding features. “It’s cool that you’re living in a world with all the stuff made from coding and you can add stuff to the world that you made.” Helpful and passionate about code, Dave has been an invaluable part of our community of coders here at Coding with Kids. Along the way he's been encouraged to keep going by older students who have mentored him and instructors that saw his potential and his hard work recently paid off when he graduated to Level 4 on the Coder's Ladder®. Dave's dream is to be a game developer and he's well on his way to building the skills he needs to get there!

Noah (Bellevue, WA). CWK Student Since May 2016 Meet Noah - His analytical mind and willingness to take on new challenges make him a star coder! Noah is a star in and out of the classroom by bringing his eagerness to learn to every situation. In the six years he's been coding, he's never met a concept he couldn't tackle. If he's interested in a topic, he'll dive deep to break it down and understand it. That's how he ended up using college level math in a recent project. "I like that you can create your own sprites and characters, you can really make anything with Scratch" Over winter break, Noah started looking into how a neural network works. (For those of us who aren't coding superstars, neural networks mimic how our brains receive and process information through code.) He researched how they work and found that the math behind them was quite intensive. But he wasn't intimidated by the complicated equations, just interested in how he could incorporate them into his work. He's still working on the project and wants to get a working version to help you win a game of connect four based on proven winning strategies. “I love making stories and games that I came up with, when it's all done, it's worth all the time I put in to see my creation.” Noah isn't only impressive in his coding classes, he was also recently the youngest competitor to ever final in a regional math modeling competition. His team had to use a bunch of data to map out the most fun day for a group a friends going to an amusement park. They worked for weeks mapping out how long they had to wait in line, how fun each friend found different activities, and a dozen other variables to come up with the optimal schedule for the trip. But all their hard work definitely paid off when they took home the finalist medal! Noah's hard work and passion for coding and math make him stand out as this month's star coder.

Ami(Milpitas, CA). CWK Student Since May 2022 Meet Ami - She's always going above and beyond in class, experimenting with creative new code blocks! Ami began her coding journey when she tried out Scratch for fun and fell in love with all the opportunities to make games and stories. She loves to read and so creating her own narratives has been one of her favorite ways to express herself. All of her projects show her curiosity and creativity, a spark and love for coding that is uniquely hers. "I like that you can create your own sprites and characters, you can really make anything with Scratch" Recently, Ami has been working on an interactive story based on the classic novel Alice in Wonderland. She's had the idea for it for months but she finally has the skills to make it a reality. The story lets the user make choices like whether to eat the "Eat Me" cake or drink the "Drink Me" potion from the book. Based on what you choose, you could grow ten feet or shrink to two inches tall. Ami just finished reading Tom Sawyer and Pride & Prejudice so maybe they will feature in her next story. "I love making stories and games that I came up with, when it's all done, it's worth all the time I put in to see my creation." Ami's instructors say she is never afraid to experiment with new coding concepts. In class, she just learned how to build a maze game and in her first project, she is already adding fun extras like a dance party when you win. At home, she's been working with an app and robot kit to build and code a dragon to move around. Ami will be graduating to Coder's Ladder® Level 2 soon and she is excited to see what new challenges that will bring!

SuperStar Coder: Mars (Age 9)
Thumnail for SuperStar Coder: Mars (Age 9)

Mars (Des Moines, WA). CWK Student Since January 2022 Meet Mars - a musician and coder who is always looking for new and interesting ways to bring his passions together! Mars is relatively new to coding, but since his parents gave him a robot he could code to move around and avoid obstacles, he's been obsessed! He had always loved video games, and working with his robot opened his eyes to coding possibilities. Since then, he has begun taking classes and more formally learning to code, starting with Scratch and now taking on projects in Minecraft and other game modding. "Usually, ideas pop into my mind, and I research how I can make them happen." Mars has a unique approach to coding due to his passion for music and is always looking for ways to incorporate sound and other features into his projects. When playing games, he pays attention to how they are scored, and his favorites are games like Breath of the Wild, which have critically acclaimed scores. In his own games, he is constantly thinking about how changes in music and sound can affect how you play. Whether it's the sound of rain in his lightning storm game or dramatic music to tell you you're about to fight the bad guy, the sound blocks in Scratch have become some of his favorites. “I love adding new functions and building on the basics of a game using animations.” It is not just sound that makes Mars' projects unique. His instructors love that no matter the project's goal, Mars always goes the extra mile to customize and make the projects his own. His curiosity and creativity have taken him far in his classes, but he is constantly looking for new ways to add to his knowledge. This winter, while he is on break from school and his Coder's Ladder class, he'll be taking a Minecraft Modding camp to branch out in a new language & direction.

Cristian (Tacoma, Washington). Coding with Kids® student since 2021 Meet Cristian - a student whose creativity has him building the coolest features into his coding projects and upgrading every game he makes. Cristian has always been interested in science but when he saw one of his favorite Youtubers build a project in Scratch, he became hooked on coding! He started taking private lessons in Python with CwK and his skills have skyrocketed from there. When he joined Coding with Kids, his goal was to learn a typed language but in a short time he exceeded even his own expectations and now he is experimenting in over 5 coding languages including Python, Javascript, HTML, Lua, and more! "I’ve always been interested in science my whole life and how things work." Cristian's drive to learn new languages is not the only thing that has made him a star coder, he is always innovating new ideas for games and projects. Recently he's been working on his version of an open world game where you can play the animal of your choice, find food and water, and either hunt prey or hide from predators. When working on a new idea for a game, he likes to start with the map to help him imagine the world he is building. Then he adds in details one by one until his idea starts to come to life. In his animal game, he has been working on build food sources like a bush that you can eat the berries off of. “When I’m older, I might want to be a stock market trader or a data scientist. Coding helps me appreciate those jobs and build my skills.” Cristian is just bursting with ideas for new games and projects. He's been working on learning Lua to build Roblox games on his own and it has inspired him to learn the building blocks of 3D games. It is clear that Cristian is driven by his love to create and so he sees 3D games as a new arena to come up with ideas. His dream is to start his own game studio that designs and builds games that kids everywhere can play.

Dylan (North Caldwell, New Jersey). Coding with Kids® student since 2022 Meet Dylan - a student who is always taking his skills to the next level whether he’s building robots with Lego or learning about the stock market. Dylan got into coding a few years ago when he joined a team of friends competing in First Lego League robotics challenges. Together, they used Scratch and Lego to build robots that could accomplish all kinds of tasks like completing an obstacle course and lifting and moving objects. The fun and competition sparked his passion for coding and so he decided to take on coding classes in Python to expand the possibilities of what he could build with code. “I wanted to get better so I could learn Python and get more confident in my abilities and skills.” Dylan sees coding as a stepping stone to his future. His dad got him interested in the stock market and how money markets work which appeals to his natural love of math, code, and data. He even has his own mini-portfolio that he gets to buy and sell stocks with! Dylan is very into data and how we use it in the real world so he enjoys doing research on which stocks will go up and down and experimenting with his investments. “When I’m older, I might want to be a stock market trader or a data scientist. Coding helps me appreciate those jobs and build my skills.” In class, Dylan is known for his creativity and adding new elements to their projects. Whenever a classmate is having trouble, he’s one of the first to try to help and problem solve through the issue. His favorite kind of projects are games based on sports and arcade games he knows but recently, watching Moneyball inspired him to learn more about how we can use data science to predict which players will do well. His passion for coding and obvious commitment to learning as much as he can makes him stand out as this month’s star coder.

Congratulations to all 175 students who completed their Level, passed their graduation exam, and moved up to the next Level of Coder’s Ladder® during July - September of 2022. Finishing a whole level takes a lot of learning and practice - well done! Here is a graph showing how many students graduated from each level: Each level takes 9-12 months to complete, on average 40-50 lessons. However, this varies by level. Some are more difficult and take longer than others. Here is how many lessons our current graduates completed on average at each level: Coder's Ladder® Level Average # lessons Level 1 29 Level 2 38 Level 3 54 Level 4 48 Level 5 45 Level 6 41 Level M 51 *Please note that progress speed is individual. Some students complete each level faster than others. For example, those who code at home outside of class tend to move through levels at a higher speed. We congratulate all graduates and wish them lots of fun and great new learning at their next level! Audrey (Cary, North Carolina). Coding with Kids® student since 2020 Our star coder for September dreams of taking her coding to space as the first astronaut on Mars. Meet Audrey! Audrey has always loved everything science and technology. As a little girl, she would build her own “robots” out of cardboard and write stories about “Techno Girl” - a superhero with coding superpowers! So when she started typing and learning to use a computer, her parents knew she needed classes to level up her skills. In her two years with Coding with Kids, she has gone from learning to move a mouse to typing her own Python commands and building fully functional games and projects! “My brain just loves having something I can work on and new challenges I can take on.“ Audrey loves tackling new challenges and her favorite projects are those that she has to work hard to solve. She loves figuring out how things work so when she learns a new piece of code, she breaks it down and researches it until she understands it. She’s a very hands-on learner and so the next topic she wants to learn more about is computer hardware and the wires and circuits that do all the work behind the scenes. At home, she even has a lego robot that she has taken apart and rebuilt a half dozen times. “I want to be an astronaut because my dream is to step on a planet and experience something no one has ever seen before.” Audrey is the type of student who when something sparks her interest, dives deep to learn more. That was how she found her passion for space and the stars when she met Mae Jemison, the first black woman in space, and was inspired to go to space herself. Ever since, she has immersed herself in astronomy, becoming the youngest member of her local astronomy club and taking every opportunity to learn more about space travel. She sees coding as a skill and talent that can help her reach her dreams.

Colin (Los Altos, California). Coding with Kids® student since 2021Our Superstar Coder for August is always looking for new languages and concepts to tackle! Meet Colin from Los Altos, CA. Colin started coding when he was 11 years old because a bunch of his friends had started coding and were making the coolest games in class. Since then, he has taken a deep dive into several languages and completed two Levels on the Coder’s Ladder®. He loves building different types of games and with every language he learns, he finds new and interesting things to incorporate into his projects. Take ping pong for example: Colin and his dad play ping pong at home and so when Colin learned a new concept that allowed him to make a virtual version of the game, he couldn’t wait to see how he could bring his hobby to life virtually! "I like math because I get to solve different types of equations and practice something that I just learned. In science, I like to do labs and get hands on experience seeing how chemicals work." STEM is such a big part of Colin’s life and some of his friends share his passion as well! Whether it is working together in the science lab or working through new math problems, Colin and his friends love collaborating on new challenges. After school, they like to get together online and work on new coding ideas together. They break up the project into different parts and assign them based on each other's strengths. Colin’s specialty is creating the framework of the code and making sure that it is functioning correctly through testing. “I want to make 3D games! I code in Roblox which is 3D but I want to learn 3D modeling like in Blender and Unity." It seems like Colin can not get enough of coding and technology because he takes every opportunity to learn new languages and programs. In the last two years, he has tackled projects in Roblox, Python, HTML/Javascript/CSS, and Blender. What’s next for Colin? 3D Games! He started Blender this summer and can not wait for the opportunity to learn Unity to take his games to the next level.

Rohan (Sammamish, Washington). Coding with Kids® student since 2020Our Superstar Coder for July is an enthusiastic student who is a leader in the classroom despite his young age. Meet Rohan from Sammamish, WA! "I got inspired by my brother to start coding, it looked so fun!" Rohan started coding at six years old when he saw his older brother coding and thought it looked like fun. He jumped into using Scratch, building games and stories of his own. Two years later, Rohan is making all kinds of projects in Javascript and Python while tackling the basics of Java with his dad! In the classroom, Rohan’s enthusiasm for coding shines through via his active participation and willingness to go the extra mile in every project. He has been able to advance so far in a short amount of time due to his dedication and the support he has from his code-savvy family. “First, [when starting a new project],I make a short plan in my mind of what concepts I need to use and how the user will interact with it.” In their house, coding is a family activity where dad will give Rohan coding challenges to work on between classes. When taking on a new challenge, Rohan first makes a plan for how he wants the project to work and how he wants the user to interact with it. Then, if he is unsure of how to make any of the pieces work, he goes to his big brother to help him brainstorm and troubleshoot. Finally, he jumps into coding and works through the plan they came up with to complete the challenge! “Java is my favorite because of how useful it is and how it lets you do things other languages don’t do.“ This Superstar Coder is determined to learn more so that he can start building the games he knows and loves. He was so excited when they learned to build a Mario platformer in class because he had been playing Mario games for years. Building these games is what got him excited to code in the first place and now his dream is to build his own games as a game developer. In the meantime, we can’t wait to see what he designs next!

Ricky (Novara, Italy). Coding with Kids® student since 2020Our Superstar Coder for June is one of our international students who has overcome great challenges to find that coding is his superpower, meet Ricky from Novara, Italy! "I love facing new and more difficult challenges in every project." Ricky, like many students, started coding in 2020 during the pandemic. Over the last two years, he has created countless projects in Scratch while moving from Level 1 to preparing to graduate to Level 3 this summer. His instructor is always impressed by how he thinks outside of the box and comes up with unique solutions to problems. Whether he is trying out a new piece of code or coming up with a new level for a spaceship game, his tenacity and creativity is a huge part of how he has been so successful in class. However, even with his positive attitude, learning to code has not always been easy for Ricky. English isn’t his first language and he had to overcome the language barrier when he first started taking classes. Imagine trying to learn a new subject (especially a technical one like coding) in a language you are also still learning! But that hasn’t stopped Ricky and through coding, he has learned that making mistakes is an important part of learning and should not hold you back from trying and trying again."I don’t know what I want to be when I grow up, but I know that coding is my superpower!" Whether he is offering creative solutions or helping his classmates to debug their own projects, Ricky always brings his A-game to class, and his enthusiasm for coding is infectious. Through his classes, Ricky has been able to build valuable skills both by improving his English and building his coding knowledge. Ricky is still young and hasn’t decided what he wants to be when he grows up, but with his coding skills and willingness to keep learning, the sky's the limit for this Superstar Coder!

Sarah (Suwanee, Georgia). Coding with Kids® student since 2021Our Superstar Coder for May is an amazing student who recently took her coding outside the classroom and won big at the county and state Tech Fairs! We are not surprised at all that she has met with such success because she has always had a great work ethic and adds her own flare to every project. Meet Sarah from Suwanee, Georgia! "The moment I knew I could use my favorite characters in my projects, I fell in love with coding." Sarah has been coding for a little over a year and this winter, she decided to take it to the next level when her school held a tech fair. Little did she know, her project would take her on to win first place in the county and second in the state! Her project featured four games in one that build in difficulty and in the final story, she wrote her own Star Wars story, drew over 100 characters based on Star Wars, and coded Scratch to play the Star Wars theme. Sarah says that she is so proud of the project that won her these prizes because the games are fun and anyone can play. "For the fair, I had to record a video talking about my code and how everything worked. That was the hardest part other than creating the games." In class, Sarah likes to ask a lot of questions to better understand the code and so over the last year, she has built an amazing bond with her instructors. When it came to her recent award-winning project, she was able to work one-on-one with her instructor to get all the pieces working and practice how she was going to explain and walk through the code. You can see how they have inspired her in the way she talks about teaching her brother Scratch and how fun it is to help him with his ideas. "My mom is a computer engineer and when I saw some of the things she could do, I wanted to learn to do it too." Despite her recent accomplishments, the thing Sarah is most excited about is what she can learn next. She is constantly exploring Scratch to get new ideas and see what cool projects other students are working on. She’s particularly interested in 3D elements and how they could upgrade the stories and games she makes in Scratch. With her enthusiasm for learning and passion for sharing her coding skills, the future is limitless for this Superstar Coder!

Liam (Elk River, Minnesota). Coding with Kids® student since 2020 We are proud to announce our Superstar Coder for April is Liam from Elk River! Liam was inspired to learn to code by his dad who is a programmer and has been coding since before anyone can remember. His goal is to become a programmer just like dad and try every programming language! This Superstar Coder has big dreams and with his drive and passion, he is on the way to achieving them. "The most exciting part when I’m programming is thinking of all the possibilities of how to make things work because there are so many different ways to make the same event happen!" One of the things Liam's instructors love most about him is his dedication to mastering new concepts. At the moment, Liam is working on a personal project that would have an AI program a story. While he says he’s been trying and failing to transform the base code of a previous project to this new application, he doesn’t seem frustrated but is excited for when he finally gets it working! It’s easy to see that trial and error are a huge part of Liam’s coding process. When he learns a new function, he creates a new project in Codesters just to try it out in different scenarios and test how it works. Whenever a project isn’t working how he thinks it should, he doesn’t quit but goes through line by line to find the issue."I showed my best friend some of my code and I think I exploded his mind." Liam is constantly sharing his love of coding with his family and friends. Since his dad is also a programmer, they almost have their own private language at this point. Mom gets very lost at the dinner table some nights! Recently his dad taught him some HTML and Liam can't wait to learn more languages so he can make more and more advanced projects.

Solomon (Boulder, Colorado). Coding with Kids student since 2020 We are excited to introduce you to our Star Coder for the month of March, Solomon from Boulder! Solomon got started coding almost by accident. As an elementary schooler interested in spies and cyphers, he looked for a library book on codes and found a book with intro level Scratch. Ever since then he has been hooked on learning new programming languages as he has progressed from Level M of the Coder’s Ladder® program all the way to Level 6. "I’m interested in taking in inputs where it’s like oh this is a mess and then making it make sense and useful." Solomon’s instructors have been consistently impressed by how enthusiastic Solomon is about coding. It is not just a class for him but a catalyst for how to turn all his ideas for games and programs into a reality. He recently hit a major milestone when he completed a project that creates randomized maps for each level of a game so that you can play it over and over and never play the exact same game. It was something he wanted to learn since he first started building projects in Scratch so now that he understands the functions, he has tons of ideas for how to apply them to other projects he’s interested in. It is easy to see how Solomon’s coding skills have transferred to his other interests. When coming up with an idea, he likes to be creative and problem-solve his way through the different challenges to make the program work correctly. He also loves to tell stories through coming up with roleplaying quests in Dungeons and Dragons. When he’s leading a quest, his friends might come up with strategies he never thought of and he has to find a way to incorporate them right into the story, just like he might have to re-write or re-think a piece of code that is not working. "Sometimes I’ll know something from a different language and I can essentially translate it to solve problems in other programs." Solomon lights up when he talks about his experience coding. He is so excited to have gotten to the level where he can take an idea and build it with the help of his instructor and classmates. He loves how collaborative his class is with them all sharing different ideas on how to solve problems in the code. He has a dream of taking that collaboration further and teaming up with a friend that is more of an engineer to develop and build the ultimate battle bot. We know that whatever cool projects Solomon decides to tackle next, he’ll impress us all with his superstar coding!

Megan (Seattle, Washington). Coding with Kids student since 2018. We are proud to introduce you to our Star Coder for the month of February, Megan from Seattle! Megan got hooked on coding after a Roblox camp during the summer of 2018. Since then, she has expanded her skills and is now in Level 5 of the Coder’s Ladder® program. In her classes, she has surprised her instructors with the hard work she is willing to put in which has taken her from a beginner to an advanced coder in such a short time. "Right now we're working on searching algorithms to solve a maze. Stuff that is logic-y is fun and the computer has a thinking process I can follow." Combining creativity and logic has been the most interesting part of coding for Megan. One of her favorite projects has been writing a program that makes cool randomized art in Scratch. She built in different colors and shapes that randomly combine to create interesting images. Similarly, when it comes to game design, Megan wants to understand every step of how it works and loves the freedom to build anything you can think of. She thinks that it is way more interesting to play a game where you created the code behind the mechanics than one that someone else thought of and built."Coding has taught me to break down a problem into steps so you’re focusing on one thing at a time. It makes things a lot less overwhelming to process." Megan says that the biggest impact coding has had on her life is that it has changed how she thinks about things. No one else in her family is a coder and so she has become really good at interpreting what she is doing in class and explaining it in normal terms to them. Coding has become this unique skill for her that no one around her has, not even the adults. Looking forward, Megan isn't sure what she wants to be when she grows up (she is only 14!) but she is sure she wants to do something with code. Whether it is building video games or engineering, we are sure she will bring the hard work and creativity that she has shown in class to whatever she chooses!

Ivan (Longmont, Colorado). Coding with Kids student since 2017. We are excited to introduce our first SuperStar Coder of 2022, Ivan Chang! Ivan began studying code at just 5 years old after an introduction to coding at his school. He joined our Little Coder’s classes shortly after and is now in Level 5 on the Coder’s Ladder®. On his coding journey, Ivan consistently has pushed the limits of his own knowledge. After quickly learning Scratch in his first year of coding, he decided he wanted to learn Python. There were not any Python classes designed for 6 year olds so Ivan checked out “Python for Kids” from his local library. Ivan has since become highly proficient in Python and is working to learn more code languages. "I like showing my friends games that I’ve made because most of them aren’t coders and I can share coding with them." Coding has been both a great opportunity for Ivan to make new friends and also expose existing friends to computer science. His skill in creating games continues to advance so much that he was able to gift one to a friend for his birthday! Ivan looks forward to building a programming team in the future so he can begin participating in coding and robotics competitions. "My teacher has asked me to do “Genius Hour” ... It lets me pick a topic I’m interested in, research it, and present about it to my classmates." In addition to coding, Ivan loves all things math and science related. He watches YouTube videos about STEM topics in his free time and has even begun his own channel as well! Ivan is passionate about sharing his knowledge with his friends and other students and his videos feature everything from game development to database navigation. Through this experience Ivan hopes to either be a game developer, programmer, or a professor. If we know Ivan, it will likely be all three!

Christina (Renton, Washington). Coding with Kids student since 2015. We are thrilled to introduce Christina Jones, our Star Coder for the month of December. She began coding 6 years ago inspired by her father who is an engineer and programmer. Christina saw coding as a way for her to contribute to the rapidly changing world of technology. Now a freshman in high school, Christina has developed a network of passionate coders and continues to inspire others to join, including her younger brother who just began coding this year! “Since taking classes with Coding With Kids, I’ve learned the possibilities for creation and innovation are endless using code. I truly feel empowered by my experience and progress with coding.” Problem solving is a key skill Christina has learned by studying coding. When learning new concepts, she sometimes finds they do not immediately “click” for her but she’s learned to overcome challenges by being curious and collaborating with her classmates. Christina has also learned the importance of User Interface and Experience. Recently, she was working on a tic-tac-toe game with what seemed to be basic elements: four lines, crosses and circles. Through the development process she discovered the much more complex framework needed to ensure the design and operation worked as simply as intended. It was her favorite project because it opened Christina’s eyes to considering not only that the code works, but how important it is that it also works well for the user. “I plan to use my skills to help the world using the lens of STEM. At the core, this is what I seek to do: help others and change the world.” A STEM enthusiast, Christina dreams of becomin g a biomedical engineer where she can combine her coding skills and her favorite school subject of biology. Outside of Coding with Kids, Christina is highly involved in multiple organizations that support women and people of color in STEM and has just joined her school’s robotics team. Excited by the possibilities learning code has created for her, Christina knows with more education, she can be a key innovator in the changing world of medicine.

Daxton (Grand Junction, Colorado) When he was little, Daxton’s mom asked him if he’d rather be a programmer or doctor when he grew up. He chose programmer! From that moment on, he started using Scratch Jr. to build small programs that did everything from animation to a little store that he could play with his friends. These days, Daxton has moved on to more complex code and as a Level 4 student on the Coder’s Ladder®, he is constantly taking his skills to the next level in languages like Python and Javascript. “I just moved to level 4 and I’m excited to learn a bunch of new things to use in my projects. It would be cool to learn more CSS animation, I could make some awesome projects with that.” What impresses Daxton’s instructors the most is how hard he works outside of class to build projects and come up with his own code. He even built a website for his drawing and writing club at school! Almost every day afterschool he spends time building projects with his friends. They will jump into repl (a program for coding in Python) and divide up a project so that they all get a piece to work on. Recently, they finished a typing test game that took them six months to complete as a team. “When I'm working with my friends on something, we'll divide and conquer so that we aren’t working on the same parts of the code.” So whether it is a new piece of code for a project or an algorithm to solve a 3x3 Rubix cube, he’s the kind of kid that likes to break down a problem and try solutions until he’s worked it out. That curiosity and passion is what drives him to learn more and why, all these years later, he still wants to be a programmer when he grows up. “I’ve made, like, millions of tests on repl to help me figure out how it works.” So whether it is a new piece of code for a project or an algorithm to solve a 3x3 Rubix cube, he’s the kind of kid that likes to break down a problem and try solutions until he’s worked it out. Emily has been coding for most of her young life! She started out with Coding with Kids as a Little Coder and has worked her way up through the levels to Level 5. With six years of coding classes under her belt, she’s gone from an elementary schooler just learning to code to a middle schooler with a solid understanding of Python and Web Development. Emily has built her skills with hard work and loves to add extra design elements to every project. “My favorite class experience was the platformer game design where I got to design the levels and difficulties.” Over the years, Emily’s instructors have noted that while she might not always speak up in class, she is often behind the scenes working hard on her projects and coming up with new ideas. She’s a Star Coder not because she’s some coding prodigy but because she has put in the effort every week to grow her skills and become the great coder she is today!“Coding has helped me with my perseverance and patience because I have to debug the code and learn new things to finish each project.” Emily loves diving into the details of building a game and working on everything from the rules to the animation. Games are particularly fun for her because she can share them with her friends and they can play together. Emily is currently creating an Asteroid game in Python, a cool space version of a dungeon crawl game with randomly generated levels where the player collects different items and fights enemies along the way. That is no easy task. Way to go, Emily!

Silas started coding right around when the pandemic hit as a way to keep his hungry mind learning even though his school had closed. He started in Javascript (yes you read that right, Javascript at 7 years old!) and from then on he was either coding or talking about coding 24/7. He loves watching videos on everything from math to chemistry but something about programming makes him light up so when his parents found Coding with Kids, it was a perfect fit for him. “One fun thing about coding is instead of just playing video games, you can create them. You can, like, recreate your own version of Mario or whatever. You can even recreate games like ping pong!” The thing Silas has loved most about coding class has been helping others to debug their projects. Getting to see what others are working on only sparks his own creativity and he says that sometimes he learns more from doing something wrong and fixing it than doing it perfectly the first time. Coding has helped him learn how to problem solve and he will spend days thinking about how to program a game or animation and getting it to run.“Sometimes it can just be fun to program without knowing what you’re trying to do, really. Like ‘code-doodling’ where you’re just putting lines of code together for fun.” Silas is not quite sure what he wants to be when he grows up. At the moment he’s thinking about being an astronaut or a Lego master builder. He would love it if he could somehow combine the two and figure out how to build with Lego bricks in space! Superstar Coder: Jaylen Age 11 Jaylen joined Coding with Kids’ enrichment programs at age 8. His first experience with coding set off a spark that led to ambitious projects and plenty of accomplishments in the years that followed. On day one, Jaylen learned how to make a cat talk in Scratch. Today, he’s learning Lua and Web Development in his private coding classes! “When I was younger I really liked the games but now I’m getting into the serious stuff that will really help me in the long run.” Currently, he is building a Roblox project for school that allows the user to explore the Seven Natural Wonders of the World — which he’s sculpting out himself using terrain tools! He plans to include his school teacher as a tour guide within the game who will educate the player on various fun facts related to each natural wonder. Jaylen hopes to eventually build an online multiplayer game where people from around the world can play together as a virtual community. “It’s always interesting for me to see how right in the beginning of learning a new coding language, I think ‘I’m never going to learn it’ and by the end I know everything about it! You have to put some brain work into it. You can’t do nothing and expect to make it.” Jaylen is already making waves in the game development world — he has published projects in Roblox and even made some Robux! He wants to pursue a career that will make him happy and excited to work everyday and is considering computer science as a potential field of study in his future.
